Area History:
Chico was founded in 1860 by General John Bidwell who made his fortune in the California Gold Rush. Chico became a strong agricultural center as the California and Oregon Railroad came to town. The city grew even more after the northern branch of the State Normal School (now CSU Chico) was established in 1887. Chico is also home to Bidwell Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country, which covers 3,670 acres on the east side of town.
Bidwell Park:
If you find yourself with free time, be sure to check out Bidwell Park. The park offers numerous trails to explore by foot, bike, or horse. The North Rim and South Rim Trails provide miles of mountain biking and hiking opportunities and spectacular views of the city and valley. If a leisurely stroll or a quick dip in frigid swimming holes is your idea of fun, then check out the Yahi Trail which follows Big Chico Creek through the park.
Butte Creek:
If you can, bring your kayak! Butte Creek runs along the southern end of town and turns into a great Class II / II+ run that can be completed in a morning. And, if flows are high enough, an awesome play wave forms where the creek crosses Highway 99. Just don’t forget your pogies and dry-top – the water gets cold!
Saturday Farmers Market:
One of the best places to shop year-round is at Chico’s Farmers Market. Featuring fresh seasonal veggies, locally grown almonds, flowers, artisan breads, and much more, the market is the place to be on Saturday morning. Located in the parking lot at the corner of 2nd Street and Wall Street.
